In the Dandaka forest, Rama faced the shape-shifting demoness Surpanakha and her allies Khara, Trisira, and Dushana.
Rama defeated them and also killed fourteen thousand demons in Janasthana.
When Ravana, the demon king, heard about this, he was furious.
He sought help from another demon, Maricha, who warned him against attacking Rama.
But driven by fate, Ravana went to Rama’s forest with Maricha.
Using Maricha’s trickery, Ravana lured Rama and Lakshmana away from their home and kidnapped Sita, Rama’s wife.
Ravana also killed the vulture Jatayu, who tried to save Sita.
When Rama found Jatayu dying, he heard from the bird that Sita had been taken.
Rama was heartbroken and performed the funeral rites for Jatayu.
While searching for Sita, Rama met a demon named Kabandha.
After defeating Kabandha, the demon, grateful in his last moments, told Rama to seek out a wise female ascetic in the Sabara community.
Following this advice, Rama met the ascetic Sabari, who welcomed him with respect.
On the banks of the Pampa River, Rama met a monkey named Hanuman.
Following Hanuman’s advice, Rama befriended Sugriva, the monkey king.
Rama shared his story with Sugriva, including Sita's abduction.
Sugriva, in return, told Rama about his own troubles with his brother Vali.
To show his strength, Rama kicked the massive skeleton of Dundubhi ten yojanas (eighty miles) and shot an arrow that pierced seven palm trees and a mountain.
Convinced of Rama’s power, Sugriva made a pact with him.
Together, they went to the city of Kishkindha. Sugriva challenged Vali, and after a fierce battle, Rama killed Vali with a single arrow.
Rama then made Sugriva the king of the monkeys.
Sugriva gathered his monkey forces and sent them out in all directions to search for Sita.
